In 2015 an automated vehicle was operated on public roads in Switzerland for the first time within the scope of a pilot trial. Trials with self-driving buses have attracted a great deal of attention and placed Switzerland among the world’s leading nations in the field of passenger transport with automated vehicles. The final reports contain valuable findings for the further development of intelligent mobility.
The Federal Roads Office (FEDRO) has declared intelligent mobility and automated and interconnected driving to be one of its main areas of focus. It is now attaching a high degree of priority to promoting projects relating to automated driving. FEDRO is also working closely together with authorities at home and abroad in order to ensure that the most uniform framework conditions possible can be created for Switzerland without delay.
On behalf of the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC), FEDRO assesses applications for carrying out pilot trials and closely monitors ongoing trials with the aim of obtaining comprehensive findings relating to new forms of mobility. For both DETEC and FEDRO, every trial is highly valuable and provides an insight into the development of a form of mobility that is still very much in its infancy.
The first trial with a shuttle bus was initiated in 2016 on the basis of a permit issued by DETEC, and was concluded in 2018. The final report containing the findings of the organiser of the trial is now available. In the meantime various other trials have been carried out.
The reports listed below contain a description of each trial and the obtained findings. They also provide information about the status of the respective technologies and the constructive and critical approach of the organisers to the complex topic of automated mobility.
