On the road to the future

The Federal Roads Office (FEDRO) is continuing to develop infrastructure that is connected, digital and future-proof. Intelligent mobility involves the targeted use of modern technologies to make road traffic more efficient, safer and more sustainable. This involves using existing traffic areas more intelligently, enabling automated driving and ensuring better traffic flow through digital systems.

Automated driving

Automated driving means that under certain conditions vehicles take over the tasks of steering, braking and accelerating – the driver only intervenes when necessary. FEDRO is responsible for developing the legal framework for automated
driving, defining type approval regulations for vehicles and issuing authorisation for pilot schemes.

Connected mobility

Connected mobility
relies on digital technologies to connect vehicles, infrastructure and road
users. FEDRO is helping to integrate various modes of transport into an
intelligently coordinated system to achieve smoother traffic flow, reduced
environmental impact and greater comfort.

Mobility data

Digital technologies enable data to be collected and used precisely, for example to improve traffic control, make infrastructure planning more efficient and increase road safety. This data is collected by measuring stations and traffic monitoring camera systems, among other things.
